Latin Field Project: Updates
Wednesday, September 12, 2007
Latin
has partnered with the Chicago Park District to develop an area for
recreational use in south Lincoln Park. The project aids with the
implementation of the Park District’s 2007-2011 Capital Improvement
Plan, which calls for the installation of 20 new synthetic turf fields
throughout the city. The
field will provide a safe, accessible, and well-maintained recreational
option for the general public as well as the school. The new field is
an area specifically designated by the Park District for athletics,
just north of the softball fields and directly west of the exit to the
Lincoln Park Zoo parking lot. Lights,
funded by the Park District, will be installed to for non-Latin uses at
night, and two sets of small bleachers will provide spectators with a
viewing area. The agreement
with the Park District allows the Latin to use the field during
specified times in a schedule similar to the school’s current usage of
Park District fields. In the fall, Latin’s boys’ soccer teams and girls’ field hockey teams will be able to use the field for practices and games. In the spring, the girls’ soccer teams will use the field. In all, Latin will use the new field for 25 percent of the time it is available during the spring, summer, and fall. Any
times that Latin will not need the field during its allotted time
slots, the school will return those times to the Park District. Through
a combination of targeted fund raising and designation of school funds,
Latin hopes to begin construction on the field in a timely manner. We
hope alumni will play an important role in providing Latin, Lincoln
Park, and the city of Chicago with this exciting new facility.
