We continue our series of Flashbacks with this news survey adapted from The Chicago Latin School News April 1951 edition.

News Survey

Following are the results of a survey conducted by The News among the students and faculty of the upper school.

 

1.  Who is your favorite female vocalists?

            Students:  Patti Page, 28%; Doris Day, 12%; Dinah Shore, 10%; Mindy Carson, 8%.

            Faculty:  Rise Stevens, 66%; Eleanor Steber, 16%

 

2.  Which vocal group do you like the best?

            Students:  The Weavers, 25%; The Latin Glee Club, 22%; The Billy Williams Quartette,                 14%.

Faculty:  The Pennsylvanians, 12%; The Shaw Chorale, 12%; The Chorus of the Metropolitan Opera, 12%.

 

3. What type of music do you enjoy the most?

            Students:  Jazz, 46%; Popular songs, 24%; Classical, 12%; Western Folk music, 10%.

            Faculty:  Opera, 60%; Classical, 20%; Semi-Classical, 20%.

 

4. What is your favorite television program?

Students:  Your Show of Shows, 24%; Garroway at Large, 15%; Texaco Star Theater, 12%; Kefauver Crime Hearings, 8%

            Faculty:  “Don’t have a set,” 60%; Baseball games, 20%.

 

5. What motion picture did you enjoy the most during 1950?

            Students:  King Solomon’s Mine, 10%; The Broken Arrow, 8%; Battle Ground, 8%.

            Faculty:  “Did not see a good one,” 32%; All the King’s Men, 16%.

 

6. What actress would you like to see more of?

            Students:  Elizabeth Taylor, 16%; Jane Russell, 10%; Esther Williams, 4%; Lassie, 1%

            Faculty:  Bette Davis, 16%; Elsa Lancaster, 16%.

 

7.  During which television program would you least mind your picture tube burning out?

            Students:  Howdy Doody, 16%; Texaco Star Theatre, 16%; White Sox baseball games, 8%.

            Faculty:  “Senseless second rate movies,” 16%; Texaco Star Theatre, 20%.

 

8.  What song do you feel is most responsible for the increased number of people in mental hospitals?

            Students:  The Thing, 36%; Goodnight Irene, 18%; Mockingbird Hill, 7%.

            Faculty:  The Thing, 33%; The Cry of the Wild Goose, 33%.

 

9.  Do you believe that the U.N. forces should cross the 38th parallel?

            Students:  Yes, 62%; No, 38%.

            Faculty:  Yes, 67%; No, 33%.

 

10. Who would you like to see in the White House in 1953?

            Students:  Robert Taft, 36%; General Eisenhower, 12%; “myself,” 6%, Anybody but a Democrat, 3%.

            Faculty:  Robert Taft, 50%; Paul Douglas, 16%.

 

11.  Do you believe that the United States should maintain an army of moderate size in Europe?

            Students:  Yes, 76%;  No, 22%; No opinion, 2%.

            Faculty:  Yes, 67%; No, 33%.
