Girls Soccer Perfect, Coach Wins 100th
Thursday, May 13, 2004
The girls varsity soccer team rose to the occasion to beat rival Francis W. Parker 3-1 yesterday, earning Coach Tom Bower his 100th win as the girls coach at Latin and clinching at least a tie for first place in the Independent School League.
Despite cold, drizzly conditions, many Latin fans -- including the entire junior varsity team -- traveled to the home field at University of Illinois at Chicago to cheer on the favored Romans.
The team responded with a nicely-played game, using the entire field and attacking well from the back. Coach Bower was particularly pleased with the team's strong defensive play, especially that of seniors Claire McCombs, Kathryn Tyree, and Tess Zelechowski, and junior Emily Putze.
Latin's three goals were scored by Emily Maynard, Zelechowski (her first of the season), and Cynthia Morote, with assists by Morote, Sara Binyon, and Taniko Nelson.
Latin began the week ranked No. 5 by the Chicago Sun-Times. After Thursday's game the league-leading Latin is 15-0 overall, and 7-0 in league play. Latin is trailed by University High School at 6-1. Parker is now fourth at 4-3.
Girls soccer became a varsity sport at Latin during the 1992-93 season. Coach Bower became the varsity coach in 1997, and has coached every year but one since then. Bower took over the boys soccer program in 1982, winning the ISL championship for the first time in 1989.
