Latin Student Founds National Literary Magazine

When then tenth grader Paige Holtzman was looking for a venue for her short stories she never imagined that a year later she would be publisher and editor in chief of a national literary magazine.

“From the time I was little I enjoyed writing stories. When I got to high school, I wanted to write but there didn’t seem to be anyone to write for. The yearbook and the Forum [student newspaper] were too journalistic, Ecco [Latin’s literary and arts journal] seemed too artsy. None of them seemed to be focused on fiction writing.”

Hearing about her frustration and knowing her determination and leadership skills, Paige’s parents and friends proposed that she solve her problem by creating her own venue.

Last week, Paige, her editorial board of 12 students from all over the Chicago area, and faculty advisor Billy Lombardo celebrated the arrival of the inaugural issue of Polyphony H.S. The professional-looking, student run magazine includes about two dozen short stories and poems by writers from public, parochial, and independent schools throughout the country.

“In the beginning I really had no idea about what I was doing or what I was getting myself into,” Paige said. But Lombardo, a Latin School faculty member and award-winning fiction writer who has been widely published, helped her to envision the possibilities ....
